You are having a lunch out with friends. A waitress offers to re-fill your cup of water but rather than stopping she just keeps pouring to the point of overflow.  The water saturates the table and quickly runs off and into your lap. Just thinking about an occasion such as this could possibly have caused you to have an “overflow” of emotion (overflow is the excess or surplus not able to be accommodated by an available space). What would have spilled out of you in that moment? Stress? Pride; resulting in hurtful words? Grace? Understanding?
Scripture tells us in Matthew 12 that out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. Like the waitress, we have water to offer those around us. Living water. “Whoever believes in me,” as Scripture has said, “rivers of living water will flow from within them,” John 7:38. As we enter into the Advent season we not only rejoice that Jesus, the living water, was born many years ago, but are also reminded of the importance of readying ourselves for the coming of Christ’s kingdom upon his return for his people. Rejoice! Christ is coming again!! What are we doing while we wait? What are we storing up in our hearts and saturating those around us with the overflow?
Lord, add to our faith daily. Fill us with your Holy Spirit to the point of overflowing. Be what saturates those around us. May you find us meditating on your Word day and night as we anticipate your arrival.  Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel, come! In Jesus redeeming name we pray, Amen!
